Halogen light -- simple,small is size and cheaper to make, produce light by heat up the filament,low efficiency,about 75% electricity turns into heat,spend more electricity to produce the same amount of light compare to fluorescent light. Produce high heat that can burn a paper in touch (fire hazard).life time is shorter compare to a good quality fluorescent light. It mainly uses on high power light source over thousand watts for long range shining.
Like the one use for shoot movie,football field etc.
Fluorescent light : most is long size, contain gas and mercury vapor,require a ballast to start and limit its current that make the light assembly cost much more than a simple halogen light. But it save electricity and able to produce close to the sun light. Light efficiency close to 80% , not much heat build up on surface of tube. life is long,average at least 5 years and no fire hazard. It maximum size is 72 inches long and power under 80 watts. It mainly uses in shop light within 20 feet area.
